You may remember the popular movie “The Help”, it was shown in theaters almost five years ago. It told the tale of several African American female housekeepers who were employed by wealthy families to care for their children. After the character Aibeeelen witnesses the child she cares for being emotionally abused over again by her mother, she decides to do something about it. Every day she tells the young child something good about herself.
Several scenes show Aibeeelen holding the girl, and saying: “You a smart girl. You a kind girl. You hear me?” She then has the girl repeat this self-affirmation ‘’I is kind, I is smart, I is important”. This inspired me to do the same activity with my two children. They now have an affirmation specific to them and it speaks to how wonderful and unique they are. It is my intent to build them up with deep confidence and healthy esteem so they never doubt their value and worth to this world.
Self-worth is being 100% aware of our value and then living a life that reflects that value. Do you see yourself as a Honda or a Mercedes Benz? Are you a silver medalist or a gold medalist? Are you worth $100, $1,000 or $1,000,000?
Self-worth is conveyed by how you see and treat yourself. It’s in the way you think and speak. It’s revealed by either self-defeating or self-fulfilling behaviors. It is demonstrated by what you tolerate from others. It is in the company you keep and even the food you choose to eat. It’s an inside job that includes having a sound spirit and mind. Self-worth is also communicated by how you present yourself to the world, an image of authenticity, personal values, and beliefs.
A woman with high self-worth will accept nothing short of her value.
To arrive at this place is no easy task. Especially if you experienced a traumatic childhood, emotional, physical or verbal abuse at some point in your life; and or lacked a supportive network of people to help you understand your personal worth.
If you recognize the indicators of low self-worth in yourself, do not lose hope. There is freedom from the battlefield of self-doubt and false beliefs about personal inadequacies.
But, many of us are unsure of how to arrive at that place and where to start. This is why I am leading a free webinar titled “Realize Your Worth: How to Build Healthy Self-Esteem and Confidence”. I would love for you to join me!
